Teacher Recommended Resources - Balancing & Weighing

These extensions are brought to you by other teachers who have used this unit. They have not been evaluated by The Einstein Project. REV. 4/24/08

Make a collage out of split peas, oat cereal, sunflower seeds, & macaroni

Make their own balance scales using margarine cups, binder clips, and their ruler on dowels

Correlate the unit with the balancing equipment in the P.E. Department
- walk a balance beam
- skateboards
- ½ sphere they could walk on
- try a unicycle

Sports: try cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating,

Field trip to the North Star gym

Do experiments with families on parent's day

Make a book with some worksheets

Integrate it with a math unit on measurement

Make bar graphs from line plots

Writing in science journals

Weighing and comparing weights

Create data charts:
- properties of different kinds of chips (Pringles, cheese balls, Fritos)  texture, shape, size, taste [then let students eat theirs]
- shells

Take pictures of students in action

Made a top from a pencil and a deli lid – wrote directions/sequence writing [first, then, next, last]
