FOSSWEB.com – works great for extending the lessons in the computer lab!

WOOD

Make a book of things made from wood & send home to share with parents on a rotating basis
 Created a book of Tree Treasures – gifts from trees

Color the posters “Foss talks about pine, redwood, & linden trees”

Make a paper toolbox & tools

To photos of trees in our schoolyard/neighborhood and with a “share pen” created a book and wrote about them. – could do through the year for one tree, noting seasonal changes.

Make a classroom tree

Students did a final summary of their wood sculpture

Wood show & tell time with items from home

Make a class book where they draw 4 wood items found in their home (done at home & returned)

Made sawdust/shavings pictures with glue (like sand pictures)
- used sawdust mixture to make bird whistles

Took a field trip to 2 houses in different stages of construction

Keep a woodworking bench in the classroom all year long – students love to create wood creations!
- Added a woodworkers area (workbench) to the classroom

Soaking some samples in water to measure weight, size, & color changes, and absorption

After each part, the students were given a “research paper” to complete.  I.E. draw a picture of what happened in the experiment, fill in the blank with the correct word. All were compiled for a “Wood” booklet.

Adopted a classroom tree and watched it change through the seasons

Used frozen juice can lids for wheels

Made popsicle stick boxes and glued shells on the top

Had the students bring in different types of paper and hung them on a clothes line to categorize, compare, contrast, and test.

Created a wood book – from Ms. Korshaun @ Doty

A parent helped build bird houses, and bird feeders for the outdoor classroom

Field trip: Paper Discovery Center – Appleton – also good for background knowledge for teacher

PAPER

“Paper Party” by Meish Goldish ( McMillan Whole Lang. Big Books)

Paper Party – at the end of the kit we had a party of paper hats, paper cups, & napkins.  We ate a paper snack (stix w/flavored powder inside).  We made paper flowers & paper rain (confetti cut in a bag).

Paper jewelry – for “Mother’s Day” we make paper pins using a cookie or candy molds, press pulp in, let dry, unmold, paint, and hot glue a pin on the back.

Environmental centers have materials on trees.

Being in the Valley, we had a team come from Appleton Paper to make paper from pulp with the students.

Performance assessment – construct a container using paper that will carry 5 markers across the classroom
- must use what they’ve discovered about the properties of paper
- one child covered his structure with wax paper incase it rained

Using paper mache bowls, put milk container planters inside with flowers grown by the children, filled in around carton with Spanish moss.

Wrote a rap song about Paper

Wrote a sequence story on sentence strips about making paper – assessment – have students put them in the right order.
