Teacher Recommended Resources - Solids & Liquids

These extensions are brought to you by other teachers who have used this unit. They have not been evaluated by The Einstein Project. (Rev. 4/26/2012)

ACTIVITIES:
Make ice cream or ice cubes
Make ziplock bag ice cream (see PDF, below)
Oil spill extension activity
Create a book -  "My Book of Solids"
Make "oobleck" - 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water (solid if squeezed in hand, liquid when hand is open)
Make finger jello to show that heat and cold can change liquids/solids
Write a Poem – Science vs. Matter
Solids "Show & Tell"/Liquids "Show & Tell"
Make Silly Liquid Sentences
Students write a letter to a Wisconsin senator about pollution
Celebrate "Solids & Liquids Day" using butter, silly putty, clouds
Artwork - Add food coloring to glue, stir with a toothpick, let it dry on a plastic plate or on waxed paper overnight. Peel it off, poke a hole through the new solid, wear it on a yarn string.
Make a 3-D organizer/flipbook with 3 sections – solid, liquid, gas

INQUIRY:
Show Free Willy II then talk about oil spills, mixing oil with water
Speaker, Gary Shulfer from UWSP Chemistry Dept. (lab instructor)
Follow this unit with a study of geometry. It provides great background knowledge of space and shapes.
