Teacher Recommended Resources - Soils

ACTIVITIES:
What Happens to Seeds? - Plant/soil activities in the AIMS series
Plant the sprouted plants in class/school gardens
Plant pumpkin seeds
Make dirt dessert
Soak & sprout bean seeds
CD - "One Small Square Backyard"
Compare composted soil with local soil to see which will help plants grow better
Grow plants in the classroom – which soil worked best? Did natural or artificial sun work best?

Make "Chia Pets" by filling old socks with garden soil and adding grass seed.  Make eyes from buttons attached with straight pins. The socks are closed with rubber bands. After watering the socks, grass grows all over the pets.  Their hair can be trimmed with scissors.

INQUIRY:
Field trip to MCC Quarry in Mackville (Pete Schwartz is the contact person)
Go to Fallen Timbers
Have a farmer or gardener tell how they use compost (could also tell what grows best in different soils)
Speaker from the DNR, or worm growers
