ACTIVITIES:
Pet rock activities (AIMS)
Students select their own rock to identify, observe, test
Make a chart - columns would be: MINERAL, HOW IT IS USED, etc.
Students create their own mineral, name it, draw a picture, & then do a profile sheet
Make Igneous (choco clusters), metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks (cake layers) with food
-make rock candy can also find at Berentsen's
-to exemplify metamorphic rock, make a bread sandwich (slice of white, slice of wheat, slice of white), put it in a baggie and stepped on it to squish. This will show twisting, melting, etc.
Fossil digging/mining in chocolate chip & M&M cookies
Discuss how mining affects the earth
- students make rules that the mining company must follow
- use tools (toothpicks) to remove chips
- draw a picture of how "the Earth" [cookie] looks before
- remove every chip & M&M using the "tools"
- draw what "the Earth" looks like after mining and discuss what happened
Make crystals using the salt recipe. Then use ammonia, bluing, and salt. These grow better and quicker.
Open a geode – can get them from the School House
Make fossil prints with milk cartons & plaster of Paris
