Teacher Recommended Resources - Balancing & Weighing

These extensions are brought to you by other teachers who have used this unit. They have not been evaluated by The Einstein Project. (REV. 3/02/2012)

ACTIVITIES:
-Make a collage out of split peas, oat cereal, sunflower seeds, & macaroni
-Balance scales using margarine cups, binder clips, and their ruler on dowels
-Make a book with some worksheets
-Create bar graphs from line plots
-Make a top from a pencil and a deli lid – writing directions/sequence writing (first, then, next, last)
-Use balancing equipment in the P.E. Department: balance beam, skateboards, half-sphere they could walk on, try a unicycle
-Sports: cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating
-Go to the North Star Gym
-Do experiments with families on parent's day
-Write in science journals

INQUIRY:
-Properties of different kinds of chips (Pringles, cheese balls, Fritos)
-Texture, shape, size, taste (let students eat theirs)
-Shells
-Integrate with a math unit on measurement
-Take pictures of students in action
